Huawei is a well known name in India. Are you aware that Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. happens to be the largest telecom equipment manufacturer in the world! It overtook Ericsson in 2012 and last year claimed the 83rd spot in the Fortune 500 list. Currently the company is the second largest manufacturer of Smartphones in the world after Samsung.
The company’s name means flower in the Chinese language and it is reflected in Huawei’s logo. The telecom giant came in to being in the year 1987 in Shenzhen. It was founded by Reng Zhengfei, a former deputy director of the People’s Liberation Army engineering corp. His wise approach was to reverse engineer foreign technologies through local researchers as foreign firms were usually reluctant to transfer their latest technologies to Chinese firms.
Consumers in India are acquainted with the Huawei Smartphones, MediaPads, and Smart Watches. Learned Readers, are you aware that the popular Honor Smartphones are a sub-brand of Huawei. Global sales of Honor 7X crossed the 40 million units mark in December last year.
The latest offerings of Huawei, namely P20 and P20 Pro are about to land on the Indian shores. Let us find out the information available so far about these two Smartphones which I am sure will sell really well during the year 2018 in the Indian market.
The Huawei P20 sports a 5.8 inch screen while the P20 Pro has a bigger one at 6.1 inch. Both variants have a full vision display with ultra-thin bezels. The P20 screen is RGBW while the P20 Pro has an OLED one. The aspect ratio for both of these Smartphones is 18:9 while the resolution is 2240 * 1080 pixels. Both Smartphones support Qi wireless charging. The P20 and P20 Pro are powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 970 octa-core processor with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit for the cool AI based features. The OS is Android 8.1 with an EMUI 8.1 skin on top. Both Smartphones support Google’s ARCore for advanced AR capabilities.
There is no headphone jack + no slot for a microSD card and you’ll find a Selfie camera and notch at the front. The P20 sports dual rear cameras while the elder sibling P20 Pro has triple rear cameras! The P20 battery is a 3400 mAh one while the P20 Pro is powered by a bigger 4000 mAh battery. P20 features 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of ROM while the figures are 6 GB RAM and 128 GB ROM for P20 Pro. The Huawei P20 series has been rated ahead of Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus and Google Pixel 2 by DxOMark in the Camera ratings and is the top rated Smartphone Camera Setup as of today. DxOMark is the leading source of independent image quality measurements and ratings for Smartphone, camera and lens since 2008.
I’ll try and cover the Camera and Video capabilities of the Huawei P20 series in another post soon. While the price and availability for the Indian market has not been revealed so far the P20 will cost Euro 649 in Europe, that is around Rupees 52,000, and the P20 Pro is priced at Euro 899, which will be somewhere around Rupess 72,000 in India. With the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus reporting Touchscreen Deadzones I am sure you’ll agree it makes sense to wait for the India launch of Huawei P20 and P20 Pro in case you are looking to purchase a top-of-the-pops Premium Smartphone with the Best Camera Setup in the whole world.
